Bernie Dowling, author of film noir crime saga books and film criticism, needed a digital platform that serves as both an author portfolio. The site needed to appeal to film noir enthusiasts, establish Bernie's authority as a film scholar, and drive book sales through multiple formats (paperback, Kindle, audiobook). I designed and developed a sophisticated Framer website that blends editorial content with seamless purchasing experiences, creating an immersive brand world that celebrates classic noir aesthetics.

Bernie had multiple books across different formats and platforms (Amazon, Audible, Apple Books) but no central hub to showcase his work or control the customer journey. The site needed to serve dual purposes: establish credibility as a serious film scholar while making book purchasing friction-free. Additionally, the design had to capture the essence of film noir—dark, dramatic, mysterious—without feeling dated or pastiche.
Film Noir-Inspired Visual Identity: Created a monochromatic design system anchored by bold black-and-white aesthetics, dramatic typography, and classic noir film imagery. Used high-contrast layouts, vintage book cover presentations, and cinematic compositions to immediately communicate the subject matter. The beige accent color provides warmth and readability while maintaining the vintage aesthetic.
Multi-Format Purchase Architecture: Designed an intuitive book showcase system that displays all purchase options (Kindle, Paperback, Audible) with clear CTAs for each platform. Created comparison layouts showing different editions side-by-side, making it easy for readers to choose their preferred format. Each book section includes compelling descriptions, key themes, and "Behind the Screen" author insights that add editorial value beyond simple product listings.
Educational Content Integration: Structured the site to position Bernie as both author and film scholar by incorporating "Meet the Mind Behind the Books" sections, behind-the-scenes content on research and writing process, and reader testimonials that emphasize both storytelling quality and historical accuracy. This dual positioning attracts both casual noir fans and serious film scholars.
